Lot Description
(1842-52) G$1 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C., Reeded Edge MS60 NGC. K-25, High R.7. CAROLINA GOLD. The A. Bechtler gold dollars struck in the standard of 27 grains per dollar of 21-carat gold with Plain Edge are ranked R.3, and are widely available in the marketplace, averaging AU to Choice AU. But the Reeded Edge A. Bechtler gold dollars of this standard are notable rarities. PCGS shows a total of four graded, one each in VF30, XF45, AU53, and AU55. At NGC there are only two pieces certified, one in AU58 and the present piece in MS60, the current finest-certified example. Given the difficulties that encapsulated coins (and coin catalogs) pose in examining the edges of coins, we have not attempted a Census of this issue. We would mention, however, that an AU55 PCGS example in a Stack's Bowers auction, June 2011, lot 9143, brought $18,400. This piece exhibits light greenish-gold color and flashes of semifreflective luster within the lettering. A thin planchet streak runs from the top of 7 to the G in the weight. The 2014 Guide Book lists the A. Bechtler 27G. 21 C. gold dollars on page 378 with no differentiation between the two edge variants. Ex: Baltimore Signature (Heritage, 7/2003), lot 10924.
