Lot Description
(1837-42) $2 1/2 C. Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 67G. 21C. MS62 PCGS. K-10, R.5. Fifth Series: CAROLINA GOLD, 26.8 grains per dollar, 21 carats. The large 250 (for the quarter eagle or $2.50 denomination) dominates one side of this rare variety, with C. BECHTLER RUTHERF. around the rim. The weight and purity are given on the other side. The Bechtler quarter eagles sometimes go unnoticed between their gold dollar and half eagle counterparts, but they are all very scarce to extremely rare. The K-10 variety is the only Fifth Series Bechtler quarter eagle, showing inverted V's for A's in CAROLINA and CARATS, and quite popular as such. This lovely MS62 PCGS piece is tied for the finest at that service with one other submission, and NGC shows a single MS63 finer (3/14). The beautiful yellow-gold surfaces show vibrant luster and a bold strike that produce excellent eye appeal. This is a coin that will be difficult to improve upon. Listed on page 377 of the 2014 Guide Book. From The Riverboat Collection.
