Lot Description
1853 Round 50 Cents. BG-435. Rarity-5-. Arms of California. MS-63 (PCGS). Not particularly rare as a variety, BG-435 does enjoy far greater demand from a wide collector base than the extant population can support. This fact is attributable to the fact that this variety is perhaps the most famous in the entire California Fractional series. A fully Choice example, both sides of this piece exhibit mirrored reflectivity shining forth form richly patinated, mostly khaki-gold surfaces. A few splashes of sandy-rose tinting are confined to the reverse. The plate coin in the 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference on Fractional Gold, and also pedigreed to the famous Virgil Brand and Jay Roe collections.
This is the only use of both the obverse and reverse dies in this series.
