Lot Description
1853 $1 Liberty Octagonal 1 Dollar, BG-503, R.7, MS61 PCGS. This sizable one dollar octagonal, issued by Frontier, Deviercy & Co., has the amusing reverse legend die blunder "CALIFORNIA COLD" (for gold). F.C.C. Boyd is credited with the discovery of this variety, and Bob Leonard lists only 10 examples in his census, possibly including duplications. This is the first time Heritage has been privileged to handle an example of the BG-503, but the AU58 example offered in the Jay Roe Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/2003), lot 101, realized $20,700. The present coin is the only Mint State example certified by either of the leading grading services (1/11). Both sides of this example show warm gold-orange luster as well as a decent strike for the type. Not specifically traced in the Second Edition of California Pioneer Fractional Gold, though a couple of AU58 coins--possibly underrated then--are listed. This specimen is the plate coin for the Coinfacts.com entry for BG-503.
