1876 Octagonal $1. BG-1117. Rarity-7+. Liberty Head. MS-63 (PCGS). This is the rare "Baby Head" variety, of which we believe only five or six examples are known to exist. The 2003 edition of the book California Pioneer Fractional Gold by Walter Breen and Ronald J. Gillio traces pedigrees for six examples, but includes the comment "probably slight duplication." Only two of the coins the authors account for are Mint State, although the present example is not included in that list and, hence, represents a third Uncirculated survivor.
Both sides are fully prooflike in the fields, the devices with a more-or-less frosty texture that provides modest cameo contrast for the obverse. Vividly toned in orange-khaki and copper-rose colors, the surfaces reveal mostly small, wispy hairlines to define the grade. A few shallow grazes are noted for Liberty's cheek and chin, however, and these should serve as useful pedigree markers.
