Lot Description
Undated P3CS Three Cent Piece, Judd-114, Pollock-128, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. This simple design has a large Arabic 3 on one side, the other depicts a Roman III. The denticles are slanted and toothlike. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. An early Mint response to the hoarding of silver coins in the wake of the California Gold Rush. W. Elliot Woodward, in his catalog of the Mickley sale, referred to this design as "the ugliest of all known coins and certainly one of the rarest." The dies were made in 1849 but per Judd, "the copper-nickel issues are restrikes." Well struck and satiny with lilac-gray toning on the open fields and the initial butter-gold color in design crevices.
