Lot Description
1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-141, Pollock-169, High R.7, PR65 NGC. The obverse has the letters USA above and the date below. The reverse design has the denomination expressed as DOLLAR above and a wreath below. Struck in gold with a reeded edge. This is one of the few obtainable patterns struck in gold. It is estimated that about a dozen examples are known. This design was also struck in silver, copper, and nickel. USPatterns.com states that some of these pieces were restrikes made around 1859 or later, but does not state how one can differentiate originals from restrikes. Unlike the example we sold in our 2007 FUN Auction, the center of this piece is smooth and well-finished. Rich reddish-gold color is seen throughout, and the strike is a bit soft on the leaves.
