1854 Pattern Braided Hair Cent. Judd-160, Pollock-187. Rarity-4. MS-64 BN (NGC). The obverse design is very similar to that employed to strike regular issue 1854 Braided Hair Cents, although there are no stars around the periphery and the diameter of the coin has been reduced. The reverse exhibits a laurel wreath encircling the denomination ONE CENT with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. Struck in copper with a plain edge.<br /> A handsome copper-brown example with even toning to boldly impressed surfaces. Both sides are expectably smooth at the near-Gem grade level, there being only a few extremely trivial carbon flecks precluding an even higher rating.
