Lot Description
1855 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-167, Pollock-193. Rarity-5. Proof-62 BN (NGC). 1858 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-203, Pollock-247. Rarity-5. Proof-65 (PCGS). CAC. 98.6 grains. Obverse and reverse designs as described in the preceding lot. Also struck in copper (100%, as denoted on the NGC insert) with a plain edge.
A diagonal die scratch (as made) on the reverse is noted, a feature seen on most (but not all!) examples of Judd-167. What we do not see, however, are clashmarks, which omission suggests that this piece is attributable to the early press run for the type. Overly softly struck, with blended orange-brown and medium-brown patina to both sides.
