Lot Description
1858 DT1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-217, Pollock-239, R.8, PR58 PCGS. The regular dies trial issue for the 1858 Small Letters Flying Eagle cent. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Only two pieces are known of this rarity. According to USPatterns.com both are business strikes (but this piece is certified as a proof) that circulated to a greater or lesser degree. The other example is a VF-XF piece, that according to the 2002 ANA catalog was, "making the rounds in 1977-80, with a sale in 1983 at $1,500." This is a lovely piece that shows slight high-point friction. The fields are light brown and the devices are surrounded by fiery mint red. The opportunity to acquire this off-metal striking may not return for many years. It has been 10 years since it was last sold at public auction. Ex: New York ANA Sale (Superior, 8/2002), lot 802, where it brought $5,750.
