Lot Description
1793 Chain Cent. S-3. Rarity-3-. AMERICA. No Periods. EF-40 (PCGS). Secure Holder. The United States' first Cent and also one of the first two denominations struck for circulation in the new Mint building, the 1793 Chain Cent holds a place of honor in the pantheon of numismatic rarities. The fact that this issue is also a one-year type also places it high on collectors' Want Lists, for the acquisition of an example is required not only for historical appreciation, but also for completion of a type set of United States coinage.
This is a very appealing EF with an overall boldness to the definition on both sides. The reverse chain, of course, is much sharper than the balance of the devices, but all are full. Even orange-gray patina throughout, with no mentionable blemishes apart from an out-of-the-way planchet flaw (as made) at the lower-obverse border than does not affect our ability to read the date.
