Lot Description
1842 1C Large Date MS64 Red PCGS. N-6, R.1. Grellman state d, the latest die state. Large cents from the early 1840s with fully brilliant original red color are extremely rare. In fact, PCGS has only certified three 1842 large cents with full mint red, including this specimen, another MS64 (if it is a different coin), and a single MS65 coin. Fully brilliant with orange mint color, and just a splash of lilac toning in the left obverse field. Both surfaces have a few very typical spots that are almost unavoidable on these large copper coins. This variety, in the latest die state, was formerly catalogued as Newcomb-10; however, new research by Bob Grellman and others has proven this to be a die state of the common N-6 variety. This is clearly finer than the Robinson Brown specimen, which was described as having only 5% of the original red color evident, and which was described as tied for eighth finest known. We would not hesitate, therefore, to suggest that this example is certainly in the Condition Census and may be one of the single finest extent for the variety.
