Lot Description
1864 1C Bronze PR66 Red and Brown NGC. The Mint delivered 100 proof sets in July of this year, included in which were the first of the 1864 bronze Indian Cents. A further 50 proofs of this issue are believed to have been sold individually. Today, the proof 1864 bronze Cent is a prized rarity that becomes particularly difficult to locate at the finer levels of preservation. In addition to smooth surfaces that are devoid of bothersome handling marks, the present Gem retains plenty of original luster in orange-red shades. Dappled medium brown patina is draped over both sides, and the strike is needle sharp in all areas. NGC and PCGS combined report a mere 20 coins in PR66 Red and Brown, and there are just three Red and Brown examples finer (7/02).
