Lot Description
1883 1C PR67 Red PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. With a record mintage of 6,609 pieces, the 1883 is a typically common date among proof Indian Cents. On the other hand, most survivors grade no finer than PR65, and at the PR67 Red level the 1883 is a significant condition rarity. We have not handled a similarly graded example in at least ten years, and, judging by our records, neither has any other major auction house. This coin is fully lustrous throughout with rich crimson accents in the obverse field and outlining many of the reverse devices. There is not a single bothersome carbon fleck or handling mark, and the devices are crisply detailed. NGC and PCGS combined report a mere three coins at this stellar level of preservation, and, not surprisingly, there are none finer (10/02). From the Joseph P. Gorrell Collection.
