Lot Description
1793 1/2 C AU58 NGC. B-4, C-4, R.3. Manley Die State 2.0, which has a mint-made die lump centered above the 7 in the date. Faint clashmarks (as struck) are noted between LIBERTY and the cap. The AT and ES in STATES are widely spaced. A lovely mahogany-brown first year Half Cent. The centers and the left side are well struck, while the right border is typically struck, presumably due to slightly misaligned dies. A lintmark (as produced) after the final A in AMERICA provides a pedigree. Minor abrasions are noted above the 79 in the date and through the lowest hair curls. NGC has certified three 1793 Half Cents as Cohen-4, and the present piece is the finest among those three with an 18 point margin. Dr. Manley states in his Half Cent Die State Book that "this variety is usually available only in low grades." From the Fred Miller Collection.
