Lot Description
1857 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-65 (NGC).
An exceptional Gem proof that boasts rich gunmetal-blue and russet toning, highly reflective fields and excellent surface quality. The eye appeal is strong. Perhaps 80 exist across the grading spectrum today. Desirable in all grades, particularly so in Gem. Beyond its basic rarity as a proof, this is a member of the short-lived Type II design, 1854 to 1858, for which circulation strikes are nearly always mushy and poorly defined. Proofs are an exception, as they were made with care. The present piece will be a true find for the connoisseur -- either for inclusion in a type set as noted, or in a year run. The coin is delightful to contemplate and even nicer to own.
