Lot Description
1857 3CS PR65 PCGS. CAC. This elusive Type Two three cent silver proof was struck the year before the U.S. Mint began regular sales of proof sets to collectors. An unknown quantity was struck, but probably fewer than 50 specimens are known today in all grades. Soft bluish-violet patination dominates the obverse, ceding to a melange of the former palette and orange-gold and beige on the reverse. The design elements are sharply struck, including completeness in the lines of the shield. Only the lines in the lower-left quadrant of the obverse star are a tad soft, but this is from vigorous die lapping. This piece displays great overall eye appeal, and is identifiable by three minute marks on the lower part of the last stand of the III in the denomination. Population: 9 in 65, 1 finer (3/13).
