Lot Description
1880 5C MS64 PCGS. The 1880 Shield nickel claims the smallest business-strike mintage of the series, at a mere 16,000 pieces. Most small-denomination coins were unneeded in commerce in 1880, because hoards of coins that had been secreted during the Civil War and Reconstruction period were released into circulation beginning in 1876. Small mintages of dimes, quarters, and half dollars were produced in 1880, as well. The 1880 Shield nickel is elusive in all Mint State grades, and examples in Choice condition are very rare. The present coin is a sharply detailed Choice specimen, with light gold, gray, and lavender toning, and slightly subdued mint luster. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 8 in 64, 4 finer (5/11).
