Lot Description
1885 5C MS66 PCGS. The 1885 Liberty Head nickel is the business-strike key to the series, from a low mintage of less than 1.5 million pieces. Most contemporary collectors preferred to buy proofs from the Mint to keep their collections current every year, so few business-strike examples were saved for numismatic purposes. Accordingly, high-grade specimens are quite rare in today's market. The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with vibrant mint luster and attractive hints of lavender and gold toning. The central design elements are sharply rendered, but some of the stars are a little flat, as usually seen on this issue. An interesting die break extends through the stars on the right, as well. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 17 in 66 (1 in 66+), 2 finer (10/12).
