Lot Description
1885 5C MS65 NGC. Because of the large mintages in the previous two years, few nickels were needed in 1885. Only 1.4 million pieces were struck and few were set aside, especially in mint condition. This piece is almost brilliant with just a hint of ice-blue patina on each side. The strike details are strong but lack complete high-point definition (as seen on the left ear of corn). The fields are bright with a hint of reflectivity, this brightness explaining the randomly placed and heavy die striations on the reverse. Census: 25 in 65, 14 finer (12/12).
