Lot Description
1913-S 5C Type Two MS66 NGC. While the 1913 Type Two is a readily obtainable issue through the Gem grade level, its D and S-mint counterparts are less well known as condition rarities. In fact, the latter is the key issue among first-year Buffalo nickels. Splendidly toned in variegated apricot, pink, and powder-blue iridescence, both sides display scintillating satin luster. The strike is superior to the typically encountered example. Pronounced die clashing (as struck) is noticed on both sides, particularly in the obverse field below the Indian's chin. Census: 14 in 66, 5 finer (11/11). Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 10/2000), lot 6068, where it brought $3,600. From The Teton Ranch Collection.
