Lot Description
1915-D 5C MS67 NGC. The 1915-D Buffalo nickel, issued in the amount of 7.6 million pieces, is often a strike-challenged issue, although the viewer would never know it by laying eyes upon this remarkable coin. David Lange writes in his series reference: {blockquote}"This is the first date from the Denver Mint in which weakness of strike becomes a factor. Though not extreme, it may be evident in the central obverse and the bison's head, shoulders and tail. Well struck examples do exist and are worth the wait."{/blockquote} This piece shows no mentionable strike weakness; au contraire, the central braid area, the feathers, the horn and fur on the bison, and split tail indicate a strike that is far above the norm; only the most trivial softness on the buffalo's head and LIBERTY prevent us from calling this a full strike. Full luster prevails throughout the gray-gold surfaces. A special coin for a fine Registry Set. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (3/12).
