Lot Description
1916-S 5C MS67 NGC. As of (11/11), NGC has certified 776 1916-S nickels. Among all of those, the single highest graded example is the present lot. It is true that, as an early branch mint issue, the 1916-S is a better date. But what distinguishes this Superb Gem from other well preserved peers? Clearly, it is its rainbow toning. Spectacular blushes of ruby-red, jade-green, and orange consume the obverse. The reverse toning is nearly as remarkable, since golden-brown, lilac, and gunmetal-blue are prominent throughout. Certified in a decade-old holder but still atop the NGC Census, this iridescent prize is unabraded and has a superior strike for the issue. The last time an MS67 sold at public auction of this issue was 2003. This one-of-a-kind NGC piece has never been offered. From The Teton Ranch Collection.
