Lot Description
1923-S 5C MS66 NGC. The 1923-S Buffalo nickel is a rare issue even in lower Mint State grades, although occasionally seen. Gem pieces, however, are quite elusive. The Premium Gem grade of the present piece, however, makes it one of only eight such at both services combined -- two at PCGS, six at NGC -- and there are none finer at either service. The surfaces show impeccable quality, with engaging luster radiating from each side of surfaces that are pinkish-gray with an occasional gold or lilac accent. A loupe reveals no marks worthy of mention, although a tiny planchet flaw appears on the bison's upper back. The reverse die is somewhat mushy, clearly showing die fatigue. The obverse die was a tad weak as well, although producing a better strike overall. But the pristine surface preservation and high aesthetic appeal put this piece in a class with few others.
