1924-S Buffalo Nickel. MS-66 (NGC). Richly and attractively toned, both sides are veiled in dominant autumn-orange and rose-gray patina. At more direct angles, however, we do see remarkably vivid undertones of sea-green and salmon-pink colors. Sharp striking detail throughout--a scarce attribute for the issue--with exceptionally well-preserved surfaces that are virtually devoid of blemishes.<br /> Buffalo Nickel production in the San Francisco Mint during 1924 amounted to just 1.4 million pieces. Most of those coins went immediately into circulation, with the result that this issue is among the most challenging in the series to locate in VF, EF and AU grades. In Mint State the 1924-S is rare, and it rivals the even lower-mintage 1926-S in this regard. The handful of MS-66s known to PCGS and NGC represent the utmost in technical quality obtainable for the issue.
