Unlike many mintmarked Buffalo nickel issues that are conditionally rare only above the MS-64 level, the 1924-S is elusive in all Mint Sate grades. Only 1.4 million pieces were originally produced, and virtually all found their way into circulation, probably within a short period of time after striking. This fortunate near-Gem comes down to us with vibrant luster and overall smooth looking features. Quite boldly struck in most areas, and further enhanced by vivid toning in a blend of reddish-orange, pale-gold and pearl-gray iridescence.
