According to David Lange, writing in the second edition of his Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels: "Although not particularly scarce in most grades, the majority are so poorly struck as to render them undesirable to collectors. Gems are scarce for the same reason" This near-Gem example is a rare exception for this issue. The design motifs are sharply struck, showing only slight weakness just above the knot in the Indian's hair braid, and exceptionally crisp definition on the bison's head, tail, and shoulder. The surfaces are mark-free, showing light steel-gray toning and a number of scattered flyspecks, mainly on the reverse, that seemingly prevent a Gem grade assessment.
