Lot Description
1797 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. B-3, BB-71. Rarity-2. BB Die State III. Stars 10x6. AU-58 (NGC). This readily identifiable die marriage neatly corresponds with the Stars 10x6 Guide Book variety of the 1797 Draped Bust silver dollar. In this die state -- the most frequently seen among survivors -- both dies have been relapped with the highest wave of Liberty's hair on the obverse and the right edges of several palm branches in the reverse wreath incomplete. The present example is otherwise boldly defined in the context of the near-Mint grade level and the fact that this is an early U.S. Mint product. The obverse is overall sharp, in fact, while the reverse is just a tad soft in the center due to a combination of strike and light wear. Smooth and appealing with subtle powder blue and rose-apricot undertones to dominant pearl gray patina. A faint adjustment mark that nearly bisects the central reverse from the upper left border is an as struck feature. Conditionally scarce for the Draped Bust, Small Eagle silver dollar as a design type.
