Lot Description
This is an important and rare coin in high grade and certainly high in the Condition Census for the variety, if not the very finest. In the June 1998 quarter variety census published in the John Reich Journal, the finest noted in that Census was AU-50. While it is possible that a few more high grade examples of this variety reside in type sets, what is known is that this is presently the best known example in the census. As to the coin itself, it is a magnificent example for the date, with lovely gray toning with blue highlights near the edge. There are some very minor surface marks, apparently from brief circulation, but they are not detracting. Struck after the dies had both cracked, the obverse with a roughly vertical bisecting break through the B of LIBERTY to just right of the 6 in the date, and another heavier crack through the top two points of the first star to Liberty's neck. Similar on the reverse, there is a vertical bisecting crack from F of OF through the shield, lowest pair of leaves to edge, and another through the U of UNITED to the central shield. These die breaks apparently retired the dies early, as this variety has not turned up in great numbers.
This coin is exceptionally original and problem free, and any collector will do well by purchasing it.
Estimated Value $800-UP.
This coin turned up in a small group at the August 2000 ANA after being held in a South American collection for 60 years. It was sold to a collector at the show and to our knowledge has never been auctioned.
