Lot Description
1838-O H10C No Stars MS65 NGC. By far the scarcer of two No Stars Half Dime issues and, more importantly, the first Half Dime issue struck at the New Orleans Mint. Just 70,000 pieces were produced. One might expect that the novelty of the '38-O Half Dime would lead to many dozens, even hundreds being spared from circulation, but such does not seem to be the case at all. The present example is currently the single finest known to both services (combined) (11/03), and one of perhaps only twenty known Uncirculated survivors. The strike is typically bold and both sides are essentially untoned with only a hint of thin silver-gray color. Some slight muting of the luster is the only mentionable factor that might have limited the already high grade.
