Lot Description
1848/7 Medium Date. This variety was discovered in 1989. The final date is boldly punched and is merged with the base of the obverse device. Repunching to the left of the final 8 shows evidence of an earlier 8 close to the serif of the 4; there is no evidence of an earlier digit within the loops of the 8. The shield points to the top of the 1. Al Blyth states, "To date, less than 10 specimens of this variety have been discovered." Surprisingly well defined throughout with no mentionable marks or spots. The silver-gray luster is slightly subdued, this probably being the grade-limiting factor. Seated half dime specialists will pay close attention to this lot.
