Lot Description
1895-O Barber Dime. MS-62 (PCGS). One of the key dates to the series with a tiny mintage of 440,000 pieces and few survived in mint condition. Toned with light silver mixed with gray-gold around the rims. The strike is quite sharp, especially so on the wreath. Good eye appeal for the modest mint state grade and a desirable coin for the date specialist.
In 1895 the American economy was still recovering from the troubles of 1893, and demand for coinage was low. Noteworthy here is the Morgan dollar, which is quite scarce from low mintages at all mints in this period. Barber dimes were no exception, with such flavorful delights as the 1894-S trickling down the coining chute to the tune of 24 pieces—if that. In New Orleans, the slack demand produced this rarity today, much to the delight of date collectors.
