Struck from the Briggs 2-B die pairing, this specimen is very well struck and boasts bold mint frost in the fields. Every square millimeter of the surfaces are toned, the obverse in iridescent sunset hues at the borders of the devices and rich sea green and rose gray in the fields and on the devices; the reverse is more regularly toned, the peach gold central portions ringed in glowing cobalt blue at the peripheries. Though PCGS has certified several dozen at or above the MS-64 grade level, this date appears with much less frequency in our experience than dates that have certified populations that are not that much greater, such as the 1857 or 1861. We surmise that the collectors are less likely to let go of this date that is perceived to be very scarce, making it very difficult to find choice examples of the date at any given time.
