Lot Description
1872 Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs 5-E. MS-65 (PCGS). This offering represents a very important opportunity for the Liberty Seated quarter specialist, as this Philadelphia Mint issue has proven to be highly elusive in Mint State grades. The original mintage is recorded as 182,000 circulation strikes, yet examples are notoriously scarce. Some numismatists have speculated that a large number of pieces may have been melted in 1873, when the weight for this denomination was slightly increased.

This Gem example offers an aesthetically pleasing array of intermingled colors on the obverse, including shades of turquoise-green, orange-gold, and russet-red. The frosty, semi-reflective reverse is mostly untoned, save for slight amounts of reddish-tan and mauve toning. The motifs are sharply rendered, and both sides of the coin are free of surface distractions. This is the only specimen graded at MS-65, by PCGS, with just one MS-66 piece graded even finer.
