Briggs 1-A is the business strike die marriage of the 1886 Seated quarter, and it is readily identifiable by severe obverse die polishing (as produced) that has obliterated much of the design detail at the letters BER in LIBERTY, the base of Liberty's rock and the tops of the digits 88 in the date. Originally toned in a blend of dove gray and blue-gray patina, this mid grade survivor offers plenty of bolder detail in most other areas. From an original mintage of just 5,000 business strikes, and an important find for the specialist given Larry Briggs' comment (1991) that the 1886 is, ""...the rarest circulated 'P' mint quarter in the [Liberty Seated] series.""
