We believe that all proof 1869 Quarters were struck from a lightly doubled obverse die, evidence of which is discernible at the bottom of the horizontal shield lines, along the bottom of the ribbon upon which LIBERTY in inscribed and at the tip of Liberty's left (facing) index finger. This dreamy Gem vies for the title of "finest known," and it is a lovely coin with strong technical quality and plentiful eye appeal. Originally toned, the obverse exhibits vivid cobalt-blue rim highlights to a copper-apricot center. The reverse is bolder yet with antique-gold, olive-copper, steel-blue and salmon-pink target toning. On both sides the underlying finish remains as bright and fresh as the day the coin emerged from the dies. Lovely!
