Lot Description
"1778-1779" (Circa 1780) Rhode Island Ship Medal. Betts-563, W-1740. Wreath Below Ship. Brass. MS-62 BN (PCGS). CAC. The deep rose-brown surfaces of this attractive Rhode Island medal exhibit chocolate-brown toning on the high points. The strike is strong for the type with tiny details such as the portholes on the ships and the textured background of the island fairly sharp. This enigmatic Dutch medal is home to two different schools of thought, one that says the medal is an affront to British Admiral Howe, while the other school of thought says it is an affront to the fleeing Americans shown on the reverse. Either way, its popularity factor has grown in leaps and bounds during the 20th Century. For the record, the present pleasing example is among the half dozen finest examples of the variety seen to date by PCGS. Choice for the grade and laden with eye appeal.
