"1778-1779" (Circa 1780) Rhode Island Ship Medal. Betts-563, W-1745. Wreath Below Ship. Pewter. EF-45 (PCGS). The deep steel-gray surfaces exhibit strong design elements for the assigned grade. This enigmatic issue, struck as a medal but seemingly circulated alongside just about anything else that would pass as pocket change during the era, features British Admiral Howe's flagship on one side and what is purported to be fleeing American troops across the land mass on the reverse. Only lightly marked and free of the tin pest that sometimes faults the scarce pewter Rhode Island Ship Medals that come to auction only infrequently. Don't let this one get away.
