A heavy die defect ridge (as struck) that joins the middle of the eagle's left (facing) wing to the scroll below the letter E makes this variety of the 1814 one of the easiest to attribute in the entire Capped Bust half dollar series. A colorfully toned and uncommonly smooth near-Gem, this piece reveals pretty reddish-apricot and pinkish-silver patina to both sides. Well centered in strike and generally sharp, with no abrasions of note. The obverse field is heavily clashed (also an as struck feature), the upper and lower reverse field areas much less so.
