This is the key date to the Capped Bust Half Dollar series, with a modest mintage of 47,150 pieces. While the actual die pairing is not particularly difficult to locate, the number of date collectors seeking an example keeps demand quite high, and these have always brought a strong premium for the date. In high grades, there simply are not enough nice coins to go around, thus when a very Choice About Uncirculated coin appears like this, bidding is always strong. Medium to light silver-gray on the obverse, a trifle more toning on the reverse that matches the obverse. This later die state has both strong clashing evidence and two long encircling cracks on the reverse, thin on this example.<br /> The Philadelphia Mint suffered from a fire in their rolling mill building on January 10, 1816 a few hours after these 1815 half dollars were delivered. This fire disrupted coinage of silver and gold until the rolling mills could be repaired, which took over a year to complete. Hence, no silver or gold coinage dated 1816 was issued.
