Lot Description
1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-113. Rarity-2. MS-64+ (PCGS). CAC. This near-Gem 1817 half dollar offers splendid collector quality with satiny luster in the fields, handsome toning, and a bold strike. The surfaces are also outstanding, with virtually no signs of handling beyond a couple of trivial nicks. The toning on the obverse is golden-gray to green; the reverse is matching with a splash of rose-russet in the fields. There is impressive depth to the strike on the curls and especially the stars, and similar strength on the reverse with all the feathers and talons sharp. Held in a museum collection for several generations, this half dollar displays elegance and appeal that is always in high demand.
Apparently this is the second finest of the variety behind the Eliasberg Mint State-65 (NGC), others noted in Steve Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars 1794-1839 grade Mint State-64 or lower of both die states of the Overton-113 issue. Certain to delight any specialist lucky enough to acquire this jewel.
