Lot Description
1817/3 50C MS64 NGC. O-101a, R.2. The more advanced (and more common) die state for the sole 1817/3 die pair with die crack through the denomination and sweeping up into the word AMERICA. The reverse die state is advanced even within the context of the O-101a as well, as evidenced by the die crack from the olive leaves through the first half of the word UNITED. The surface quality is simply extraordinary, and the interplay of luster and color -- peach and gold outer bands, blue-to-green interiors, all lit up by near-reflective flash -- adds up to masterful eye appeal. The interior design definition is a trifle soft, but no true connoisseur of the series will be put off by this. For the 1817/3 variety, Census: 6 in 64, 3 finer (11/11).
