Lot Description
1823 50C Patched 3 AU53 NGC. O-102, R.4. This scarce variety of the "patched 3" shares an obverse with the O-101, but the reverse has a large center dot between crossbars four and five, a filled S in the motto, and numerous die cracks. Here a crack joins the three pairs of olive leaves before terminating below the eagle's left (facing) wing, another runs through ED ST, with a third branches off from between the S and T to end above the motto. This coin at first glance appears Mint State, with medium-gray lustrous surfaces accented by flashes of aqua, mint-green, and gold on the peripheral devices. But a closer look shows light rub on the highpoints, light hairlines in the fields, and a strike that is soft in the centers. Both dies are somewhat eroded. Nonetheless attractive, appealing, and conservatively graded. Envelope Included.
