1824 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-117. Rarity-1. MS-65 (PCGS). CAC. As a type, Capped Bust half dollars are scarce at the Gem grade level or any finer. This date is no exception and, excluding the various overdate varieties, there are only 11 pieces graded at MS-65 by PCGS. None of those pieces are specifically identified as examples of O-117, however.<br />
The offered, visually appealing example has exceptional striking definition and light toning. The impressively preserved, blemish-free surfaces exude full shimmering mint luster, with iridescent coral-red and sky-blue accents distributed across the high points and near the borders. Any Capped Bust half dollar specialist should be tempted by such an outstanding and conditionally rare coin. This example is tied for second finest in the Condition Census listed by Steve Herrman for this variety, with a single example as Mint State-66 and three more as Mint State-65. This is an important offering for the variety or type specialist.
