Lot Description
1861-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar. WB-101, Die Pair WB-9. Rarity-2. Rarity-2. Large S. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. The design elements on this gorgeous half dollar have excellent definition, especially on Liberty's head and foot, as well as on the eagle's feathers and shield. Shimmering luster and light, original toning are evident on each side; along with smooth, well preserved surfaces.

This example appears to be from a very early die state, without the obverse die cracks that are typical of this Wiley-Bugert die variety. Although WB-9 is likely the most often seen die pair for the 1861-S issue, Bill Bugert has stated that he has never seen any example without the obverse die cracked, (in A Register of Liberty Seated Die Varieties, Volume I, San Francisco Branch Mint, page 79.)
