Lot Description
1892-O 50C MS65 PCGS. Although the mintage of Barber half dollars at New Orleans in 1892 was limited to just 390,000 coins, it is usually considered a readily available date. While that may be true in lower circulated grades, and perhaps even up to about MS60, examples in Gem quality are extremely rare, as the PCGS population data reveals. In our past auctions, we have only handled eight PCGS MS65 examples, along with a couple higher-grade NGC coins. The Dale Friend Specimen is a remarkable Gem that exhibits brilliant silver luster with light splashes of gold toning on the obverse. The reverse is bright and untoned. Particularly desirable is the satiny, reflective field luster that surrounds fully frosted devices, imparting a wonderful cameo appearance. A minor skirmish on Liberty's neck is the only imperfection of any note. While the top edge of the right (facing) wing is a little ill-defined, the balance of the design elements on both sides are bold and crisp. Population: 12 in 65, 4 finer (10/08). Ex: Heritage Galleries. From The Dale Friend #2 All-Time PCGS Registry Set of Barber Half Dollars.
