Lot Description
1892-O 50C MS68 S NGC. This monumental coin hails from the T. Price collection. Liberty and the devices are deeply frosted and this coin appears to be a proof at first glance. Toned with a halo of peripheral gold with a few flecks of blue on the upper rim, perfectly matched on the reverse. Fully struck on the obverse and nearly so on the reverse, with a trace of weakness on the claws of the eagle. Outstanding surfaces and eye appeal for any date, especially so on this key coin. The mintage for the year halted after a mere 390,000 coins were struck. A few were saved as the first year of issue, but most entered circulation. This issue commands attention and demands diligent searching for any example above the VF grade level. This particular coin was obviously set aside from the day it was struck and very carefully preserved. One simply cannot imagine a more perfect specimen of this date. Furthermore, NGC and PCGS combined have graded a total of two specimens this high, and of course, none are finer. NGC even awarded the coveted "star" to the holder for high eye appeal. The other MS68 example graded by NGC does not have the "star" designation. Therefore one can claim that the present coin is the finest known, and it certainly has claims to be the finest graded of this date.
