Lot Description
1893-O 50C MS66 PCGS. In 1929 M.L. Beistle reported a branch mint proof of this issue. While no such coin is known today, from looking at this piece it is easy to see how he might believe that such a coin was struck. The fields on this piece have a bright, semi-reflective sheen, one might even say prooflike, with just a touch of cartwheel present. The striking details are a bit irregular with several of the obverse stars weakly defined and considerable weakness on the eagle in the center of the reverse. Mostly brilliant, there is just the lightest bit of golden toning on each side. Only the slightest signs of contact are seen on the obverse, making this one of the finest examples known of this scarce, early Barber half. PCGS has only certified two other pieces in this grade and NGC has only recorded one such coin, none are finer at either service (11/04).
