Lot Description
1900 50C MS67 NGC. Ex: T. Price Collection. With a mintage of more than 4.7 million pieces, the 1900-P is not one of the issues in the Barber half series that immediately comes to mind when one thinks of scarcer and especially underrated coins. However, it is surprisingly difficult to locate in both mint condition as well as circulated grades. Gems are just as difficult as many mintmarked issues and Superb pieces such as this are almost non-existent. This is one of only two pieces that have been so graded (one at NGC and one at PCGS) with none finer (11/04). The devices are well defined on each side and the surfaces have the softly frosted mint luster that is commonly seen on Philadelphia coins. Both sides show a mixture of russet, blue, violet, and greenish-gold coloration, and the only post-striking impairment is a milling mark behind the mouth of Liberty that is largely obscured by the tonal qualities. Ex: Thaine Price Collection (Akers, 5/98), lot 148, where it brought a modest $8,800.
