Lot Description
1908-S 50C MS66 PCGS. CAC. The 1908-S Barber half is an elusive condition rarity in Gem quality, with only 13 examples certified by PCGS in MS65 or finer grades. Dale Friend's Premium Gem is similar to the Hugon coin that we sold in January 2005, the only other MS66 PCGS example that has appeared in any of our auctions over the last 15 years. It is much finer than the Pryor coin, and similar also to the Eliasberg and Price coins. In top grades, this issue compares favorably to the 1907-S, one of the most important issues in the entire Barber half dollar series. PCGS has certified three MS66 coins and two MS67 examples, compared to four MS66 1907-S halves, and three of them in MS67. While the strike is somewhat indistinct, especially on the reverse, the surfaces are pristine with few marks of any kind. Faint roller striae can be seen on the obverse, remaining from the original planchet. Satiny and lustrous surfaces are visible through splendid gold and iridescent toning. Population: 3 in 66, 2 finer (10/08). Ex: Heritage Galleries. From The Dale Friend #2 All-Time PCGS Registry Set of Barber Half Dollars.
